The Origins and Evolution of Sparks
Sparks, Nevada originated in a distinctive manner beginning in 1902. Before this period, the region east of Reno consisted of expansive ranchland and wetlands occupied by the Washoe Tribe. With the railroad industry flourishing near the century’s end, the Southern Pacific Railway Company recognized the area’s potential. Southern Pacific opted to adjust their rail path and transfer their switchyard and maintenance facilities to the present-day location of Sparks, Nevada. The company then divided their acquired land into sixty-seven parcels, providing relocated workers with a deed for a 50’ x 140’ lot. After selecting plots through a random draw, the settlers established the fledgling town of Harriman, honoring Southern Pacific’s president, E.H. Harriman. It was later renamed Sparks after Nevada Governor John Sparks.
Sparks saw gradual expansion until the 1950s, when a surge in housing development paved the way for warehouses and light industrial growth, which persisted through the 1970s. In 1984, Nugget Casino Resort became the city’s inaugural high-rise casino.
