Rule for three sets of reference mark [ duplicate ]

Rule for three sets of reference mark [ duplicate ]

What rules exist there for when you have three circle of reference score ?

“ I see that Julia cost very annoyed when Mike answered , “ ‘ Blade Runner , ’ ” ” John said .

( ‘ Blade Runner ’ in singles . Mike answered in double . John say in doubles . )

“ I saw that Julia was really annoyed when Mike respond , ‘ “ Blade Runner , ” ’ ” John state .

( Mike answered in singles . “ Blade Runner ” in double . John suppose in doubles . )

“ When Mike reply , “ ‘ Blade Runner , ’ ” Julia looked very angry , ” John said .

( Mike answered in double . ‘ Blade Runner ’ in single . John order in double . )

Essentially , I ’ m wondering whether you alternate , or start little and begin bigger until you can ’ t get any bigger .

The conventions may change accord to British or American custom , so please nation which one you be refer to .

The “ pattern ” is to alternate quote mark . You can start with double or singles on the outdoor , following whatever mode guide you favor , but then alternate . I prefer to take off with double-quotes , which means that the future band cost single and then twice after that , and thus on .

John exclaimed , “ I exist truly annoy when Julia state ‘ Leave now if you want to learn “ Blade Runner ” . ’ ! ”

John exclaimed , “ I was really annoyed when Julia said ‘ Leave today if you want to see “ Blade Runner ” . ’ ! ”

However , as Reg hold point out , titles should be place in italics . It ‘s real unusual to need three sets of quotes .

John proclaim , “ I be really annoyed when Julia said ‘ Leave today if you want to seeBlade Runner .’ ! ”

John proclaim , “ I be actually annoy when Julia said ‘ Leave today if you want to hearBlade Runner .’ ! ”

Some Bible passages act want several levels of quotes , for instance a passage such as

The Lord said , “ Go to my masses and tell them , ‘ The Lord say , “ You are a fallen people … ” ’ ”

The Lord state , “ Go to my masses and tell them , ‘ The Lord say , “ You are a fallen people … ” ’ ”

Since I expect most authors would seek very hard not to write with three nested sets of quotations , it may be that style guides do n’t cover this . I would try to rearrange the division to head off the issue . Failing that , I would use italics for one level of quotation . You could innovate and adopt guillemets ?

I personally use “ ‘ « ‹› » ’ ” , it stave off a lot of confusion .
