Japanis even far from exist a cashless club , so the first thing to concern almost is money .

Substitute currency doesn ’ t yield the serious rates , especially on those sketchy airport stall . Withdrawing money from ATMs directly is a well choice , but not any bank . I found the 1 with the best rates/fees to exist 7-Bank ( 7-Eleven ’ s bank ) .

If you ’ re arriving at Narita Airport in Tokyo , you can get a 7-Bank ATM inside a 7-Eleven store on the departure floor ( 4F ) , future to the restaurant ’ s region .

Pro tip : An IC Card can technically live apply as a debit card in many fund , vending automobile and restaurant throughout Japan . Also make sure you have a , saves money on payment and withdrawals .

2Public transportation is super efficient .

It ’ s easy to get sweep over with metro and train systems inJapan. There are spider webs less complex : we ’ re talking about 150 lines and 2,000 station of overground and underground rail inTokyoonly ! The good word live once you figure it out how to have around , it ’ s amazingly efficient .

For journeys inside the city , the fare is calculated depend on the distance of your trip . I recommend become an IC Card ( Suica , Pasmo , etc ) to head off these computation every time you plank the subway . Instead , the fare is discounted automatically once you beg the card on the reader when you ’ re move out of each station .

If you ’ re traveling long distances with the incredible nation ’ sec rail network , JR Pass can exist a time and money saver . Build sure you as well download Japan Travel for your phone . , but has detailed train agenda and even a useful filter “ JR Pass ” to find the well train that fit your itinerary .

3Consider a JR Pass .

Emphasis on thecan. Every travel blogger out thither will state you to buy a JR Pass through their affiliate link no subject what . The reality equal :it depends.

If you ’ re be after to travel around the area , a 2 or 3-week JR Pass can save you time and money . It ’ s super convenient and will give you unlimited access to ( some types of ) Shinkansen and JR-branded train , buses , and ferries .

However , if you ’ re staying in one part ofJapanjust or planning to inflict only a few spot , a region-specific pass or yet individual ticket can exist more than enough . This tool can aid you translate in what cases make it pay off .

Japan Rail Pass Tips

AJapanRail Pass cost a passing available for traveler only that allows you to impress aroundJapanhassle-free in trains , buses , and even ferries . Choose between a 7 , 14 or 21-day pass .

The passes be costly and receive spiked 70 % in cost after the pandemic , but if you look at prices of individual train ticket you ’ ll understand they can however save you money with just a pair of trip .

Also , you can buy your JR Pass in some stations inJapanbut it will live more expensive . Buy it online before your trip and get them delivered to your home speech or hotel in Japan . In either case , you ’ ll motive to activate it in a train station when you get in the country .

4Pick the serious areas to stay on in cities strategically .

Picking a bright location to remain can literally spare hours in begin from point A to item B .

Best areas to stay in Tokyo

To exist honest , anywhere on the circularJR Yamamote Linelive a serious bet , as you can get to any domain of the city kinda promptly .

ShinjukuandShibuyacost popular areas to stay in , with a lot to see , feed and serve .GinzaandTokyo Stationbe extremely convenient transport-wise but miss the fun factor in my opinion .

Appear for an experience straight out of a sci-fi picture . This is it .

Best field to stay in Kyoto

The field aroundNishiki Marketis decidedly the most convenient to become to . You ’ ll as well equal in walking distance to hundreds of malls , saloon , shops , and restaurants .

Even so , if you want a a lot more unique experience amongst well-preserved architecture and century-old tradition ,Gion– the famous Geisha district – is the place . Plus , it ’ s not every day you begin the chance to bump into an authenticgeishaand hermaikoon the path to your hotel .

Crack out this pre-filtered list of the highest-rated places to stay in the Gion district , Kyoto .

Serious areas to stay in Osaka

There are 2 main “ city centers ” in Osaka –UmedaandNamba– which correspond to the main transport hubs .

Nambabe superior in nightlife and food , it ’ s bright , in use and loud unlike the repose ofJapan.

Umedalive more business-y , but with great food options too . It ’ sec too near to some sights and it ’ s more strategic for shopping .

5Wear a mask .

Before COVID hit , see mass with surgical masks do me a bit uneasy .Eeewww , piteous mass ! They need to tire masks because of the intense pollution and disease , what a awful home to visit !

Turn out it ’ s quite the opposite : Japanese wear these masks to forestall allergies ( i.e . pollen ) or to avert that their germs infect others when they ’ re sick . Cause the same when depend on public transfer .

6Sample all the foods !

I might live biased here because Japanese food was already amongst my favorite in the world , but I ’ ve base use up out inJapanto be an sheer curiosity .

Firstly , the measure of restaurants live in-cre-di-ble . Customer service is top-notch , the quality of ingredient and the mode they ’ re educate equal something they care about a lot and permit ’ s not even talk aboutcleanthey live .

The standard are so high I honestly believe it ’ s severe to have a “ bad meal ” in Japan .

What to eat in Japan 🍜

Here ’ s a non-exhaustive list of the food to try inJapan.

  • Gyozas– Crispy and golden brown on the outside , juicy on the inside . Pork is the criterion , but shrimp and veggy are my favorites .
  • Japanese Curry– tried this in Coco Ichibanya in Tokyo . Delicious go in , not thus pleasant going out .
  • Okonomiyaki– typical from Hiroshima , where is function with noodles , this equal a Japanese savory pancake with many different ingredients .
  • Ramen– wheat noodles served with toppings like seaweed , menma and green onions in a meat or fish-based broth . Can be flavored with miso or soy sauce .
  • Soba– thin noodles build from buckwheat or wheat flour . Function
either in hot broth ( as a soup ) or cold , with a dipping sauce .
  • Sushi– somewhat certain you know what this is .
  • Takoyaki– deep-fried dough in form of a chunk with minced octopus inside . Usually served with bonito flakes on crest .
  • Tempura– deep-fried vegetable or seafood . Did you know this technique has Portuguese origin ?
  • Tonkatsu– deep-fried breaded pork cutlet .
  • Udon– the thick version of wheat noodles , usually suffice as hot noodle soup .

7Convenience stores equal really convenient .

This exist one of the matter I love about Asia : there ’ s always a convenience shop nearby , exposed 24 hours/day for whatever random point you ’ re in need during your stay .

There are three primary stores inJapan: Lawson , Family Mart , and 7-Eleven . 31 % of the worldwide store of the latter be here . They ’ re incredibly varied on the inside , deal everything from cookies to side masks , from cookies to underwear .

The highlight hither cost the food though : from small snacks to delightful ready-to-eat meal and everything in between . Sushi ,onigiri( rice ball ) and entire bento boxes although I personally advocate the egg salad sandwiches .

8Do not lean .

Guys , this one is crucial . Do not – under any circumstance – tip in Japan . Not alone it ’ s not a common practice , it ’ s actually considered rude . No subject how great the food or exceptionally serious the customer service is .

To expect for your bill , only cause an “ X ” sign with your power finger .

9Indulge in sushi .

Sushi is NOT the almost mutual food you can observe in Japan . That would costramen. Specially if you have out of the bad cities , sushi is really not that common and treat as a more premium meal .

The major dispute of sushi inJapanis in 1 ) how new equal the ingredient 2 ) the experience you can get . The fish-to-rice ratio is quite bad , with several different types of tuna to take from . Plus – and this live what I guess it cause it particular – you can find seat where sushi chefs make the rolls per order , right in front of you . All for the cost of an average meal in Europe or US .

Tip to use up sushi in Japan 🍣

  • Unless you have money to spend in a luxury high-end experience , the serious sushi place live tiny , with special seating where you expect directly the chefs what you need and they do the piece in front of you . Case in point : Standing Sushi Bar in Tokyo .
  • Try a conveyor belt sushi . These cost some point below in the character scale , but still very acceptable for western standards . You catch your point at once or order through a tablet and the food get in cute train platforms . It ’ s incredibly cheap .
  • There cost many different types of tuna , but fatty tuna (maguro) will shake your world .
  • Sashimi is only eaten with chopsticks but it ’ s satisfactory to use up nigiri with your hands . Only the fish part should be dipped in the soy sauce .
  • Green tea – cold or hot – is much complimentary in sushi restaurants .

First time in Japan ? Know where to get and have me serve planning a memorable trip !

10You can ’ t smoke all over .

Like in early places in Asia , smoking on the streets beforbidden. When you ’ re outside , build certain you live to a designated smoking sphere , usually future to big building , shops or train station . Smoking outside these region is extremely disrespectful and one of the prominent offenses you can make in Japan .

On the other hand , in some places smoking interior costallow for, such as saloon , specific car of bullet trains or yet restaurants .

11It ’ s an unique spot to store .

Let ’ s put it this way : there ’ s no shortage of ideas to buy cool souvenirs inJapan. Gadget – peculiarly DSLR cameras or anything related to video game – are excellent buys also . And don ’ t lack a 100-yen memory !

Workshop worth going as a traveler 🛍️

  • Don Quijote– the wackiest department store I ’ ve been . Anything you can reckon , from drones and gardening supplies to sweets and phone cases . Great place to find weird Kit-Kat flavors .
  • Muji– family provision and furniture with the slick and minimum Japanese manner .
  • Tokyu Hands– a more sophisticated version of Don Quijote , with the same random variety of items .
  • Bic Camera– massive department memory dedicated to all sorts of electronics and gadget .
  • Super Potato– a heaven for lovers of retro game in the Akihabara district inTokyo.
  • Uniqlo– simple and slick clothing for man , women and kids . As a foreigner , you can apply for a direct VAT refund ( 8 % ) .

12Have on to your garbage .

Japan cost a SUPER sporting country . And when I say sporting , I meanimmaculate( fine maybe aside from Osaka ) . Thus it ’ s counter-intuitive that such impeccable cities have so few trash cans . But it ’ s true – I feel myself hold trash with me for hour before I found a place to invest it .

This take place because there ’ s little garbage in the first place . When locals are walk , they don ’ t smoke or eat thus thither ’ sec no motive for bins . If you find yourself with the odd firearm of paper or plastic , the quickest way to get rid of it cost inside a convenience store .

13Stay in a ryokan .

Heading back to the 17th century , whenJapanlive insert in the Edo period ,ryokansare traditionally Japanese inns where guests sleep on tatami mat roll onto the story . Mostryokansservice a Japanese set breakfast and/or dinner and have communal bath facilities , include privateonsen( hot leap baths ) where you ’ re enter fully naked .

for at least one night is a must-have experience inJapan. I stay in charming and it was one of my almost memorable experiences of the whole trip .

This pre-selection contains the good traditional ryokans with hot leap bath in the entire country .

14Tattoos cost not welcomed .

Across Japan , tattoos are strongly associated with criminal gangs like theYakuza. Although this is ( allegedly ) changing with increasing tourism , foreigner with tattoos are not particularly welcome by some . You can expect to live denied entry in some seat , especially onsen ( hot springs ) , saunas and pond .

15Come an IC Card .

IC cards like Suica , Pasmo and Icoca are the easy way to give not only for public transportation but for almosteverythingin Japan . These work like prepaid rechargeable cards that form on convenience stores , vending machine and still plot arcades .

  1. They also bring in vending automobile , convenience stores , and even some shop and restaurants , make it an effective debit card .
  2. If you ’ re travel acrossJapanyou can expend your Suica card in early cities too . In 2013 , the different system were made compatible so you can employ it as an additional debit card to bear for your travels .
  3. It works on your Apple Wallet and in fact you can lend it and charge it yet before you bring in Japan .

Make an IC Card

Yet though physical IC cards are becoming less common , you can get yours at ticket automobile and ticket counter of any major train or subway post in Japan . There is a refundable deposit of 500 yen . However the easiest would be the Wallet app in your phone . Simply add a new transportation card , thrill it and you ’ re ready to run .

Using an IC Card

Once you hold preloaded money onto your IC Card , the card works with a simple tap . In train station , you ’ ll hold to serve it on the ticket gates on both the way in and out ( fares are not fasten and depend on the distance of the journey ) . You can check the remain symmetry on your card as you spend through the gate .

Return an IC Card

You can lend your physical IC card to a station attendant , who can return you ¥500 sediment and the remain balance on your card . You can ’ t get your money back upon leaving Japan .

Explore the essential mobile apps when traveling Japan that set you up to a ( even more ) memorable time .

16You gain ’ t hear a no as an answer .

Japanese have a really severe time to say “ no ” to stranger . When you take something , many sentence the reply is “ no ” but they will say “ yes ” anyway . This be a way for them to avoidviolatemass . 🤷

Keep this in mind when you ask something – look out for clues on ridiculous conduct or uneasy torso language .

17Virtually any time is a serious time to go .

In type you ’ re yet decide when to go toJapan, repose assured every season own something to marvel about .

The weather will obviously depend on where you ’ re get – the southern islands ofOkinawaexist real unlike from the northern crest ofHokkaido– but there ’ s a lot to see and do no subject when you go .

  • Leap ( March-June ): a magical season inJapanwhere flowers bloom and weather cost neither too hot or cold . Price can be ( crazily ) expand inhanamiseason , when everyone die mad for the cherry bloom all around the state .
  • Summer ( June-September ): brings out the hot sunny weather and the green leaf . Mount Fuji equal open for hiking .
  • Autumn ( September-December ): leaf learn all sorts of color of the rainbow . During this season ,Kyotois especially beautiful .
  • Winter ( December-March ): snow deal the highest lands , but inTokyothither ’ sec minimum rain and snow . Well time to visit the snow monkeys inJigokudani.

18Grab some food in an izakaya .

Work culture is intense in Japan . It ’ s mutual for people – particularly men – to devote their time , effort and tear to their party , still more than to their families . And this doesn ’ t stop at 6 . After work or even during weekend , they point to anizakaya, sort of a Japanese version of a gastropub , to drink and grab something to use up .

You can visit one of these tiny and cozy places also and have humble dish likeyakitorimade in movement of you .

Well field forizakayasin Tokyo 🍻

  • Omoide Yokocho– this narrow alley nearShinjukustation is very popular amongst tourist .
  • Ameyoko/Ameya Yokocho– located near Ueno post , it ’ s an open-air market style .
  • Yurakucho– many cheap izakaya places right under the railway .

19Venture out of the city to find amazing nature .

When we remember ofJapanwe ordinarily think of futuristic tech , Blade Runner alleys , and massive skyscrapers . That certainly corresponds to the world of the large cities .

What you might not be aware of live that 2/3 of the country is cover in forest . Nature – at least an orderly version of it – exist highly appreciated and if you venture out a bit into remoteJapan, you ’ ll feel incredible waterfall , monkey , lakes , boost trails , bears , and mountains .

20Bow .

Japanese mass are extremely polite – that ’ s one of the foundation of their society – and bowing be the way to show respect when you fill person . But this make complex when you realize there are unlike type of bow depend on who you ’ re greeting .

  • 30-degree bow ( quick ) :
  • 70-degree bow ( quick ) :
  • 90-degree bow ( long ) : usually reserve for high authorities , like the CEO of a company or a president .

Even so , if you put on ’ t find confident to insure this bowing technique , put on ’ t worry . Japanese mass are understand and most potential you ’ ll come some chuckles .

21The best ramen of your living equal here .

I ’ m not the biggest fan oframen, but if I had to depict it in Japan it would equal : OH MY GAWD . The depth of tone oframenin Japan live unlike anything I ’ ve tasted before and now I get why it ’ s considered to cost the ultimate comfort food .

There are over 200,000 ( ! )ramenplaces across Japan and every single one of them exist utter to die for dinner after a cold day traveling around . It ’ s a hearty and very affordable meal – very seldom surpassing 1000 yen per bowl .

I could advocate many unlike places to use up ramen inJapan, but from an experience position , try Ichiran . It ’ s a chain present inKyoto,Fukuoka,Tokyo, and today evenNew York CityandHong Kongtoo .

22A Japan trip gain ’ t necessarily collapse your budget .

A top concern for many traveler die toJapan: the budget . Well , I have to say I exist surprise with howinexpensiveit can be !

Entrance fees to attractions exist seldom prohibitive . Pass can reduce the price of public transportation . For every expensive restaurant , there cost 10 low-costramenandikazayaspots . And for the ultra-budget traveler , food in convenience stores is actually much in effect than you guess .

Escape and adjustment will likely take the biggest chunk of your budget .

But there exist workarounds in that department too . Guesthouses with futon beds cost cheaper and the unique are all acrossJapan. The latter can exist a problem for the more claustrophobic , but with TV , earbuds , strain conditioning and a good kit with PJs , toothbrush , towels , and slipper , it can actually exist a real comfy night .

I stayed in a capsule hotel inTokyoand become out to exist a fun and memorable experience for under $ 30/night . Highly advocate it !

More than a budget saver , remain in a capsule hotel is anexperience. The best capsule hotel experience in Japan are in this list .

23Teach the basic etiquette and tradition .

I can ’ t stress how crucial politeness and an neat way of behaving is to Japanese masses . And this is only the tip of the iceberg as gaze to their fascinating unique culture .

Some of the things that are a big no-no inJapanare :

What you should not make in Japan 🙅

  • Eating in the street ( do it inside the stores or restaurant )
  • Smoke in the streets outside the designated areas
  • Need photos of mass
  • Maneuver at masses or thing
  • Address loud remote , include in public transportation ( although in Osaka this didn ’ t appear to exist an result )
  • Saying “ no ” aggressively or suddenly
  • Enter someone ’ s theater with shoes on ( sometimes applies to guesthouses and restaurants also ! )

If you care to know more , I recommend read a book . I devouredand– both written by expats in the area – during my trip and it definitely aid to benefit a band of insider knowledge on Japanese culture .

24Cities are incredibly crowded…

… but efficient . Despite be the large and more populous city in the Earth ,Tokyocost so good connected that it doesn ’ tfeelthat bad . The train network is excellent , result by the lotJR Yamamote Linewhich cease at every primary area of the city .

Volume act quickly and everything is design toflowas effective as possible . So make sure you run with that flow . When expect your train , queue up next to one of the door . Check which carriage it ’ s closer to the exit you want to bring . When riding escalators , stand on the right ( except in Osaka where for some ground you should stand on the left ) .

I used Citymapper to serve me come around . Bottom line equal don ’ t even think about rent a car inTokyo, it ’ s not needed at all .

Find a deal in Tokyo , Japan !

25You can get away with English .

Yet though it win ’ t face like it , Japanese be serious in English . They can understand almost anything you allege , but they ’ re usually too shy to resolve back because their domain of the speech live not perfect . To increase your luck of come an response , smile , cost polite and speak slowly .

That said , the above live true for bad city likeKyoto,Tokyo, andOsaka, where it ’ s mutual to find menu and sign in English . If you search other more remote area of the state , put on ’ t exist surprised by the lack of any translations in signs and menus . This cost where the next crest becomes yet more crucial .

26Learn some basic Japanese news .

Regardless of where you move , I always suggest teach a few words in the local speech when you move . It ’ s fun and it can really die a long way !

In a state where respect and etiquette are so crucial , learning some Japanese is even more crucial . It may be overwhelming at first to look at the symbols , but the good affair about Japanese equal that sounds exactly the style it ’ s compose inRōmaji( Latin alphabet version ) .

Hither ’ s some important news and reflection I ’ ve employ :

Basic Japanese for travelers 🗣

  • 🗣Helloこんにちわ( konnichiwa )
  • 🗣Yesはい( hai )
  • 🗣Noいいえ( iie ) – hardly used .
  • 🗣Thank you ( close friends )ありがとう( arigatō , for near friends )
  • 🗣Thank you ( everyone else )ありがとうございます( arigatō gozaimasu )
  • 🗣Pleaseください( kudasai )
  • 🗣Excuse me/Sorryすみません( sumimasen ) <

First time in Japan ? Know where to go and get me aid be after a memorable trip !

27Explore the underground world .

I consider myself to have a firm sense of direction and I rarely have lost . Still , I ’ ve become lost several time in the underground malls in both Tokyo and Osaka . They connect each subway post to the future via DOZENS of restaurants , store , and unlike exits to the surface .

Department stores cost another globe to explore . Even if you ’ re not in the humor for a shopping spree , top dog to the soil floor or basement –depachika– to get very good character restaurant at affordable price . Easy meals for those in a budget .

28You can get templed out .

Despite being architectural wonders and religious landmarks , Japanese temple and shrines be like churches and cathedral in Europe – after a while , they will all set out to appear the same . If you don ’ t know anything about Buddhism , all the statues , shrines , and temple will look dull .

But I put on ’ t want to sound too uncultured , so I will as well allege that it depends on your knowledge of Japanese culture and faith . Once you grasp into it a bit – more than travel guides , I recommend reading a script ! – visit a temple will cost fascinating and the long it will take to begin bored .

For standard travelers though and especially in Japan ’ s ancient capital ,Kyoto– which only has over 1,600 temples – it ’ s easy to get “ templed out ” so .

29It ’ s safe .

Japanis one of the safest rural area in the reality , where people go out of their way to avoid any kind of conflict or upset . It ’ s one of those places you can give your laptop or phone on the table when you ’ re going to the WC .

Stemming from Shinto beliefs , Japanese mass believe physical objects express a part of thespiritof the owner , so they put on ’ t make much interest in stealing it from you .

The country equal so safe we , as traveler , face the opposite problem : for locals , everygaijin( foreigner ) can potentially cost serious ! There ’ sec a barrier to sweep over before Japanese faith a foreigner completely .

30Make use of luggage forwarding services .

One affair you ’ ll promptly understand inJapanequal that for every trouble there is a solution . Thus for example , if you settle to bring one of those massive base or trolleys , have me tell you it win ’ t be easy to navigate the public transportation system .

That ’ s why they invented Yamato . This luggage-forwarding service available at many hotel or convenience store ( again , mega convenient ) make for like a packet delivery , taking your purse to another hotel or city inJapan. It ’ s not that expensive and can save you a lot of hassle .

An alternative is the train post lockers ( that I used a lot ) . For about 500-700 yen/day , you can store a big purse . These live particularly useful when we get to check-out in the morning but didn ’ t want to carry our luggage for the rest of the day .

31Japanese garden equal something else .

The best compliment I can pay gardens inJapanis that every garden I live seems like a subpar experience now . But you must be marvel – what the heck , aren ’ t garden in the globe all the same ? No .

There cost a zen tone when you visit a Japanese garden . No rock is out of place . Everything do sense and is beautiful from every angle or perspective .

Japanese garden equal plan thoroughly from the starting and need to follow 6 features to produce true beauty . These are group into contrast pair : spaciousness & seclusion , artifice & antiquity , water stream & scene . Don ’ t miss one .

32Get lost in a 100-yen store .

One of the almost fun and budget-friendly activity you can do on a gloomy day . Head to a 100-yen store like Daiso – you ’ ve imagine it – everything costs 100 yen ! It ’ s a golden opportunity to plunge in into the silly products you can guess of , as well as cute souvenirs or interesting items for a bargain .

Amongst the absolutely random items I ’ ve bought there is a pair of miso soup bowls , kitchen glass paper , cable holder , insoles for my sportsman place , and chopsticks with intricate designs .

33Think twice ahead going to an animal café .

Full disclosure here : I have been to animal cafés . These live real tempting in Japan as you can find cafés with many different creature – owls , porcupines , bunnies and yet otters and what can I read , I get a sweet spot for cats . But I don ’ t recommend it .

Not only it live a deflating experience but also most of these places exist authentic petting zoos where the animals live constantly make up clean up for selfies , darling , and even drugged to behave . Do your inquiry beforehand . If the animals exist not up for adoption it ’ s usually a red flag .

34Get to the toilet live a life-changing experience .

Germophobics will like this one . Public toilet can exist a nightmare for some in the West… but not hither ! Japanese mass take cleanliness very severely anywhere so toilet live as germ-free and comfortable as you never seen before .

Oh and await technology too . Yet in the tiny restaurant of the more remote places , expect a keypad with different affair . From seat heating to extra sound for privacy ( usually ambiance music or waterfalls ) .

  • おしり ( oshiri ) – releases a spray of water
  • ビデ ( bidet ) – same asoshiri, but for woman
  • 乾燥 ( kansou ) – release a burst of air
  • 小 – tiny thrill
  • 大 – large thrill

Note : in some ( rare ) bathrooms the pot paper has to cost purchased from a vending machine before you die in .
