Let me be upfront—avoid visiting Buffalo during the winter. The same goes for early spring.

If you don’t enjoy snow or aren’t interested in seeing the Christmas lights at Niagara Falls, I’d recommend visiting Buffalo solely from May through October.

Summer

Buffalo is at its finest during the summer months. The weather is likely to be gorgeous, and despite the larger crowds, there’s nothing quite like experiencing Niagara Falls under the warmth of the sun.

Visiting in early June means fewer crowds since children are still attending school (or perhaps on excursions to Niagara Falls…). However, June also brings the highest likelihood of unpredictable weather. For optimal summer conditions, August is typically more reliable, though daily variations can always play a role.

Fall

The ideal season to explore Buffalo is autumn, particularly September and October. The climate tends to be pleasant, especially in September, while many seasonal attractions remain operational—along with special autumn events. You may also witness stunning fall foliage during this time.

Throughout the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, control of the fort shifted repeatedly among the French, British, and American forces. Although it ultimately came under American ownership, much of its design, including the “French Castle,” reflects French influence.

The drive from Buffalo takes about 40 minutes, but I’ve listed it here rather than as a day trip from Buffalo since it pairs perfectly with a visit to Niagara Falls.

The Colored Musician’s Club is temporarily shut down for upgrades, enhancing its amenities while preserving the historic structure. The ongoing improvements will elevate this already remarkable destination, making it an even more compelling place to explore!

Stand at the Historic Site of Teddy Roosevelt’s Inauguration

In 1901, Buffalo held the Pan-American Exposition, a showcase of cutting-edge technology and contemporary culture from across the western hemisphere. Numerous impressive structures were built (primarily temporary) for the six-month-long exhibition.

President McKinley was fatally shot at this location, passing away and transferring leadership to Vice President Theodore Roosevelt. The impromptu inauguration took place at the residence of his friend, Ansley Wilcox. Today, the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site in Buffalo remains open for visitors.

Tickets can be purchased in advance or upon arrival. Tours depart hourly, starting at half past each hour. A complimentary parking area is provided for visitors to the site.

Many large urban areas feature botanical gardens, though some stand out more than the rest. Personally, I’ll admit, I often bypass the botanical gardens when exploring a new city.

The Buffalo Botanical Gardens captured my interest. The structure is stunning (unsurprising, given Buffalo’s charm), and it’s a top spot among my friends who live there. They organize unique events, such as a nighttime fairy light stroll, which felt truly enchanting!

Explore the New Era Flagship Store

If you love sports, chances are you own a few items from New Era. For a short period, the Bills’ stadium was even named New Era Field (and colloquially referred to as “The Cap”) for a couple of years.

The athletic apparel brand was established in Buffalo, NY in 1920 and currently serves as the sole supplier of sideline headwear for the NFL, MLB, and NBA. Stop by the New Era flagship store in downtown Buffalo to grab a baseball cap as a keepsake from your visit to the city.

Journey to the Eternal Flame

For years, whenever the NFL visited Buffalo to film Bills games and highlight local landmarks, the focus was typically on Niagara Falls or Buffalo wings. However, with the Bills recently playing in more high-profile matchups (go Bills!), the league has begun featuring a broader range of Buffalo’s attractions.

For example, during some of the January football matches, you might have noticed this regional landmark, the eternal flame, blanketed in snow (credit to the camera crew who trekked through the snow to capture the footage!).

The Eternal Flame stands out as one of the top (and most distinctive) hiking paths close to Buffalo, NY. The trail isn’t particularly lengthy, roughly half a mile in each direction, but it does include some moderately steep sections.

The trail concludes at a small grotto featuring a stunning waterfall. Yet what truly stands out is the tiny fire flickering behind the cascading water. As you approach the falls, the scent of natural gas fueling the flame will signal your proximity.

Visiting the Eternal Flame: Helpful Suggestions

• The well-known path is clearly indicated. Keep an eye out for the small flame markers as you walk through the forest.

• Despite its name, the flame sometimes extinguishes. Carrying a lighter allows you to reignite it.
• The eternal flame parking lot has a spacious gravel area for vehicles but lacks restroom facilities.

Hershell Carrousel Factory Museum

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, numerous carousel manufacturers were active in and around Buffalo, NY. Talented craftsmen employed at these facilities meticulously carved exquisite horses and various creatures for the widely enjoyed amusement attractions.

Today, the Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum in North Tonawanda (located between Buffalo and Niagara Falls) welcomes visitors. You can view samples of the carousel figures they once crafted, experience the sole operational Wurlitzer Music Roll globally, and enjoy a spin on the historic 1916 carousel!

The museum is compact, so allocate about half an hour to tour it. However, be sure to enjoy the carousel and check out the gift shop! It’s an excellent pit stop when returning to Buffalo from Niagara Falls.
