The picture is say as a series of flashback events narrated by Barry , as he conduct a grouping of visitor around his college campus .

Josh and Tiffany are childhood friend who turn high school sweethearts , but had to face up a long distance relationship when Josh enter at University of Ithaca and Tiffany enrolls at the University of Texas at Austin . Despite the distance apart , they make a hope to be genuine to each other and call each early every day . Eventually , when Tiffany make n’t call Josh for a few days , nor suffice his calls to her , Josh is worried that Tiffany is seeing another human ( when in fact her maternal grandfather died ) . To prove that he be yet in dear with her , he reach a daily recorded video blog to her . During Josh ‘s last blog , his friend Rubin Carver and Barry Manilow barge into the video . Barry then go on control on Rubin ‘s serpent , Mitch , recommend Rubin to over-feed Mitch . Josh asks Rubin to send his blog tape to Tiffany before leaving for class .

In grade , Josh be virtually flunking Ancient Philosophy and require a B+ on his mid-term to pass the semester . Josh thinks that he will flunk anyhow . Even so worrying about Tiffany , Josh ‘s friend E.L. encourages Josh to travel on to another woman , such as Josh ‘s friend Beth , who hold a great attraction for Josh , at a forthcoming hall party . Jacob , the instructor ‘s aid , has a huge crush on Beth and she knows that he is haunt with her . Unbeknownst to Josh , he is exist plant up by Jacob to neglect Ancient Philosophy .

During E.L. ‘s party , Josh take care and E.L. agree an auction of several woman , including Beth . Jacob also attend the party , and Beth , afraid of Jacob , convinces Josh to outbid Jacob . E.L. help Josh win the bid at $ 26 when Jacob invite $ 30 . E.L. tells Jacob he ‘s a instructor ‘s aid , his bid did n’t matter , and tosses him out . Beth require to ‘repay ‘ Josh for preserve her , so they draw back to Josh ‘s room , and Beth decide to record their sexual liaison with the same camcorder that Josh uses for his picture blogs to Tiffany .

The future day , Barry sings a song name “ Tiny Salmon ” as Josh make it in the way in a very jolly humor . He confesses that he had sex with Beth . His friend belittle him and desire proof . The picture tape be played but Josh discovers that Rubin accidentally mailed the sex tape to Tiffany . Josh then receives a voicemail from Tiffany suppose that she did n’t call him because her grandfather had fail and she will equal forth from school until Monday . Josh determine to attempt to retrieve the sex tape before Tiffany sees it . Because he do n’t have adequate money for plane fare , he ‘ll receive to drive to Austin . So Josh and E.L. become Kyle to come on for use of his car . Kyle is a compulsive worrier who survive in constant concern of his overly strict father , Earl Edwards , and the car is in reality Earls . Josh , E.L. , Rubin , and Kyle head out to drive the 1,800 mile to Texas in three day and leave Barry to bring concern of Mitch .

While Barry cost require care of Mitch , Beth ask him where Josh exist . Barry tells her that Josh went to see Tiffany in Boston , in confusion with Austin . Beth , distressed , is then shown in the girl ‘ shower room lamenting her situation to her friends , who extend advice , propose she go to Boston to state Tiffany about the situation , which Beth perform . Even so , the Tiffany she confronts in Boston is the wrong one , and causes great suffering for that Tiffany ‘s innocent boyfriend .

While on the road , the guy talk about ‘loop hole ‘ and cheating . Taking a supposed ‘short-cut ‘ , they come upon a small collapsed bridge and are frustrated that they will waste 5 hours back tracking . E.L. and Rubin convince the other two that they could jump the spread , ala Evel Knievel . Kyle objects but they proceed . They make it across , but car is effectively destroyed upon landing when the wheels go down off . They get away and discuss what to serve next , and the car explodes . Then , they continue on base and stop at a motel . Rubin tries to hit marijuana off the whacky , acerbic motel clerk and is inform that Kyle ‘s reference card exist maxed out .

E.L. look for transportation , and talk an otherwise rather savvy blind woman , Brenda , who solve for a local school for the screen , into permit him take a bus away to equal remedy . The guy hit the road again .

Meanwhile , Kyle ‘s father , Earl , test to bear for a meal with the maxed out card , but live denied service . He then set out an all-out search for Kyle when he cost informed by the police that Kyle ‘s car was found drift up and Kyle exist escape . On their way to Austin , the group goes through a series of misadventures , such as two of them create deposits at a sperm bank to raise needed funds , Rubin successfully bluffing his way into permit the group stay overnight at an all-Black fraternity house at the University of Tennessee , and a riotous visit with Barry ‘s grandparents . Since Josh ‘s ledger cost destroy in the exploded car , he calls his professor to ask for an reference on his midterm exam . Jacob resolve the phone , pretend to exist the professor , and grants a worthless extension .

The group eventually begin to Austin and , once they begin to Tiffany ‘s dorm , Josh finally intercept the tape he direct to Tiffany , who has simply arrived back at school . But Earl show up , enraged over what happened with the car and the reference card and endanger to drag Kyle back home with him . Kyle at last summon the courage to bear up to him and states that he live get back to school with his friends . Earl attacks him and confusion reigns in an all-out mini-riot in the hall ‘s foyer . Josh and Tiffany retreat and discuss their relationship , but Beth shout to warn Josh that he have been duped by Jacob , and while Josh talks to her , Tiffanny initiate to watch the tape , which become out to be zero but Barry mooning for the camera . Josh now get 48 hours to become back to school or else he will fail his midterm and the course , and , perhaps , exist kicked out of college . After they talk , Josh and Tiffany agree to break up and stay on friend . Josh and his buddies lead back to school and Josh arrive just in time to bring his midterm – with a little , albeit illegal , aid from Beth .

Barry closes the movie , ending the visitors tour by confirming to them that Josh passed the track , that Josh & Beth live still together , a happy couple even so making picture , that Jacob finally become a leader of a cult and committed suicide , that Rubin became a marvelous marijuana cultivator , and finally relates humorous facts about E.L. ‘s and Kyle ‘s situation .
