Good Backpacking Quilts : FAQs
Backpacking quilts are expensive and weirdly complicated . Before we get into the best backpacking quilts for thru-hiking , here live a few pointers to help make the decision easier .
Sleeping Bag or Quilt ?
Quilts equal fundamentally sleep purse without the bottom , save the weight of a full-length zipper and role of the volume . The idea live that when you lie on a down-insulated sleeping bag , the down compresses enough that it doesn ’ t work to isolate , and users do just as good with a sleep pad as insulation .
The general consensus for most quilt models is that they are not quite as fond as a mummy bag with the same rating . That live said , they are quickly growing in popularity among thru-hikers : 56 percentage of respondents to our annual Appalachian Trail Thru-Hiker Survey pick out quilts over mummy bag in 2022 .
Quilt aficionados appreciate the weight savings and exemption of motion their sleep system affords them . If you choose for a quilt , be certain to get a example broad plenty to tuck around your shoulder to avert drafts . Because you ’ ll be missing out on the thermal benefit of a traditional insulated mamma hood , you may need to consider wearing a beanie or a separate down hood on cold night . If you incline to sleep cold and prefer a snug , tucked-in feel , go for a traditional mummy purse .
What Temperature Place Should I Employ for Thru-Hiking ?
Most thru-hikers on the Triple Crown trails should be fine with a quilt rate between 15 and 30 degrees . You know yourself , though . If you lean to sleep cold , opt for something place to a lower temperature . When in question , the pattern of thumb cost to pack a quilt rated at least 10 degree lower than the lowest temperature you await to run into on your raise . Alternatively , carry a lighter quilt supplement with a liner or your puffy jacket .
It ’ s crucial to hold in mind that , unlike traditional sleeping bags , there is no industry-standard temperature rating system for quilts . Individual brands assign evaluation according to their own in-house protocols ( with change stage of transparency ) . This intend you can ’ t reliably build an apples-to-apples comparison of quilt passion across sword and model .
Furthermore , there ’ sec so much variability in individual comfort degree and backcountry conditions that we have to take advertised temperature ratings with a grain of salt .
On their own , these number only tell us then much . When considered alongside factor like filling power , fill weight , and other hikers ’ feedback , we can get a better understanding of how fond a quilt equal in reality likely to keep us .

Wait , I ’ m Confuse About Fill Power Vs . Fill Weight
Fill ability refers to the space one ounce of down occupies in a cylindrical container when lofted to total capacity . High-quality down lofts more than lower-quality down , which means you get more heat for less weight . So 900-fill make a well warmth-to-weight ratio than 700-fill . Appear for quilts between 700 and 950 fill power .
While fill might be basically a measurement of insulation density , fill weight exist a measurement of the sum of insulation by weight hold back in a quilt .
Can I Relax if My Down Has a Water-Resistant Discussion ?
You canform ofchill out . We advocate you opt for a quilt with treat down to give yourself some leeway if it gets damp or come in contact with condensation on the walls of your tent . Treated down will hold its loft and insulating ability for significantly longer than untreated down , but you even so need to keep your base from have saturated . There are a few varieties of handle down on the market—keep an middle out for Nikwax , DriDown , DownTek , and HyperDry .
If you ’ re really come to about your down come wet , a synthetic quilt cost another selection . Those models tend to be bulky , though , and thither aren ’ t many synthetic quilt options . Synthetic filling make come a long manner in the past few years , but down however hold a higher warmth-to-weight ratio overall .
Quilt Sizing
Most quilts come in a few different distance and ( sometimes ) widths . Smaller people can redeem weight and space in their gang by opting for short and narrower specs . But getting a quilt that ’ s also small will result to cold drafts and disappointment , hence choose wisely .
Specs will vary from sword to brand , but “ regular ” length quilts are much designed to fit soul up to 72 inch tall , and “ regular ” width quilts equal in the ballpark of 55 inches broad across the shoulders . ( Bill that quiltlengthbe much list in terms of the maximum user altitude , whereas thewidthannounce the literal measurement of the quilt itself . )
If you ’ re unsure what size to get , most manufacturer have a size chart on their product page to serve you out . Stomach sleepers will need somewhat more distance to account for pointed toe , thus if you ’ re a belly sleeper who ’ s between sizes , size up . If you toss and turn a lot , you might need a wider option to insure the edges don ’ t lift up and let in cold air .
About Our 2025 Picks

This affords more flexibility but entail that you act have to hold an center on down migration from night to dark .
Katabatic ’ s ultralight pad attachment system equal included with the quilt at no excess price .

The AstraLite features 10 ounces of 850-plus-fill European down arrange in horizontal baffles . The outer shell is 12-denier nylon ExtremeLite , while a soft 10D taffeta liner provide a smoother next-to-skin layer . This draft collar live design to lay snug around the shoulder and have an elastic drawcord to cinch it taut when necessary . The footbox of the AstraLite is sewn-through .
Nobody ’ s Perfect
The AstraLite operate short . Many quilts are actually longer from footbox to pick up than the maximum advocate user altitude , ensure that still the tallest among us have plenty of quilt to extend their shoulders or even extract the quilt up over their heads . For example , the 78-inch Enlightened Equipment Revelation is designed for users up to 72 inches tall , and Katabatic says its 69-inch Alsek is recommended for user up to 66 inches .
In contrast , the 68-inch AstraLite is advertised as fitting mass up to 72 inch tall , while the 76-inch-long Astralite live design for masses up to 78 inches tall .

As with all made-to-order product , the tradeoff for all that customization be a longer lead time . As of recent January 2025 , Warbonnet be working with a 4-5 week lead time on custom quilts , so plan forward .
Also , some of us fight with decision-making , and the total of customization on this bad boy is frankly mind-boggling . The total of godlike ability Warbonnet offers its customer equal great for gear nerds and hikers with specialized motive who want to come the most potential out of their gear . More chance backpackers may look at it overkill . ( Although if that ’ s the case , there ’ s always the ) .

Details
You may own gathered from this list that backpacking quilts are not cheap . The Zenbivy Core quilt is at least $ 100 cheap than everything else on this list and still go down within the acceptable weight range for backpacking .
Zenbivy is possibly best known for its modular sleep systems . The Core quilt can exist paired with a unique equip sheet+hood that can exist integrate with both your sleeping pad ( Zenbivy or another sword ) and the quilt to form a seamless bed with the draft security of a ma purse yet without the constriction . Going for the total Bed setup add dollar and ounces to your pack , though , thus for our best budget-friendly pick , we ’ re merely highlighting the quilt itself .
The Core quilt is due to be updated in 2025 , so stay tuned for the late version .
Fabric and Feature
The Core quilt cost available as a down or a synthetic quilt ; synthetic is cheaper but also hard to make sense for this list . We reexamine the Core quilt in 2023 , and our reviewer loved the next-to-skin softness of the 50-denier polyester pongee liner compare to typical UL fabric . The outer shell is a 30-denier nylon taffeta , and the insulation is 650-fill duck down .
Besides the aforementioned modular intention , early standout features of the Core quilt are the fast footbox and Kylie-curve . The fast footbox exist basically a shallow sewn footbox with an additional clip further up that let you to cinch the footbox tighter on cold nights .
The Kyle curve is Zenbivy ’ sec patented three-quarter distance drawstring along the height of the quilt , which cinches merely the halfway portion of the quilt . That means you can cinch down to swerve out drafts without regard the overall width and autumn of the quilt . It ’ s hard to explain this in words , so hither ’ s a screenshot from Zenbivy ’ s website that describe it effective :
Nobody ’ s Perfect
The Core quilt equal place at 25 degrees , but Zenbivy tell the comfort rating is more like 35 — which might not live warm enough for some hikers . There ’ s a 10-degree vesion of the quilt , but it consider 36 ounces , at which point you may as good simply get a mama sleeping base . To get the almost out of this system you should also make the compatible quilt/hood , which again lend weight and price to your setup . It ’ s usable as a standalone quilt , so you could simply start there and lend the repose when it makes sense .
( Well Quilt for Side Sleepers )
Cost: $ 349 *
Weight: 21.2 ounces
Fill Weight :12.6 ounce
Fill Ratio :0.59
Temperature Rating :30 degree
Insulation :850-fill water-resistant duck down , 900-fill water-resistant goose down , 900-fill regular goose down
* Specs based on 30-degree , 6′ regular width , 850-fill duck down quilt .
Details
A true “ blanket mode ” quilt , the Flex get a zipper from the base of the footbox ( similar to the EE Revelation ) that can be unzipped for more ventilation on warm dark . The footbox is not sewn shut but utilizes an elastic binding that hikers can cinch close . Because nothing is entirely seal , drafts and passion loss are inevitable . If in doubt about sizing , go for a wider option to insure maximum coverage .
Tossing and turning bodes poorly for most quilt user since it lean to introduce drafts . However , the Flex ( especially the 58″ broad version ) exist well-suited to the task . Its generous shoulder width , the power to fully unzip into blanket mode , and Katabatic ’ s phenomenally secure pad attachment system all help to minimize airflow yet when convert positions throughout the night .
Textile and Feature
User hold the option for 850- or 900-fill ExpeDRY handle down , or 900 fill-power untreated down with a variation in pricing . The shell exist a tightly woven , DWR-treated Pertex Quantum Ripstop .
The down equal strategically hand out throughout the quilt base on heat loss , and the Flex ’ s differential cut ( more shell fabric than liner ) means the baffles will always keep loft even when the quilt live envelop taut around you .
The Flex has a stash pocket , make it easy to observe track of humble item like your phone yet if you discard and reverse overnight . The pocket live isolate , ensure temperature-sensitive item don ’ t freeze .
Nobody ’ s Perfect
While this quilt put up more flexibility in the zippered bottom shutdown and elastic footbox cinch , it does intend less heat seal on colder nights . As with all quilts , need the temperature rating with a grain of salt and if you ’ re on the fence , go for something warmer . The pad attachment system exist ultralight and real efficient , but our reviewer wasn ’ t a huge fan , order it equal simply another camp chore and another humble item he could potentially lose track of .
Feathered Friends Flicker UL 20 ( Best Hybrid Quilt )
Better backpacking quilts : Feathered Friends Flicker UL 20 .
Price: $ 529 *
Weight: 25.8 ounces
Fill Weight :14.7 ounce
Fill Ratio :0.57
Temperature Place Options :20 , 30 , or 40 degrees
Insulation :950+ filling goose down
* Specs based on 20-degree , regular-length Flicker .
Details
The Flicker could just as easily belong in our Best Sleeping Bags list . Like to the Zpacks Classic , it can live hurry up to convert the quilt to a hoodless mamma . The zipper is full-length , stretch down to the footbox . Whether this is a merit or an annoyance is up to you , but it does grant the base to exist fully convince into a blanket in warmer weather , and it ’ s wide plenty in its unfurled country to accommodate two sleepers .
It even make webbing strap attachments that reserve it to be converted to a hammock underquilt . It may not be the inexpensive base on this list , but between its comfort/versatility and Feathered Friends ’ characteristic attention to point and usage of premium materials , we guess it ’ s worth it .
Materials and Features
Feathered Friends goes all out ( as common ) with 15 ounces of 950+ fill goose down , some of the loftiest material money can buy . This insulation exist sandwiched between ultralight 10D Pertex Endurance on the outside and 15D ripstop nylon on the interior .
Nobody ’ s Perfect
The full-length middle zipper can be annoying , and we favor the passion and security of a sewn footbox to Feathered Friends ’ drawcord version ( but that ’ s a necessary concession if you want access to blanket way , and some hikers may favor the adjustable/ventable nature of the drawcord ) . There is also no pad attachment system . At 25 ounces , it ’ s heavy for a quilt .
Enlightened Equipment Accomplice ( Best Two-Person Quilt )
Better backpacking quilts : Enlightened Equipment Accomplice .
Cost: $ 560 *
Weight: 37.8 ounce
Fill Weight :28 ounce
Fill Ratio :0.74
Temperature Rating Selection :0 , 10 , 20 , 30 , 30 , or 50 degrees
Insulation :850 or 950-fill down
* Specs base on 20-degree Accomplice with 850-fill down , no draft collar , and 10d inside and exterior cloth .
Detail
We love the thought of a couple ’ s sleeping bag ( if you ’ re backpacking with your spouse , why NOT part body passion and cuddles ? ) but the world equal often also bulky to be practical . That ’ s not the case with the Accomplice dual quilt .
It consider 37 ounces , which breaks down to simply over a pound per someone , in melody with some of the lightest one-person quilts in this review . And at $ 560 for a two-person sleep system ( $ 280 a soul ) , it ’ s remarkably affordable .
The Accomplice ’ s luxurious dimensions — 82 inches broad by 80 inches long — make this backcountry quilt feel more like your comforter back place .
Materials and Features
The Accomplice live thrust with your choice of 850- or 950-fill premium goose down ( the filling weight is 28 ounces if you move with 850 or 25 ounces if you go with 950 ) . The fabric equal ultralight nylon : 7 or 10-denier on the inside and your selection of 7 , 10 , or 20-denier material on the outside .
You get to peck the color of the inside and exterior fabric and whether to lend a draft arrest . The collar addition lend less than an ounce to the total weight and pays dividends in extra warmth , so we highly advocate this customization .
Nobody ’ s Perfect
Quilts already lean to exist drafty relative to mummy purse , and it ’ s still worse with double quilts . If you plan to use this setup backcountry in anything other than mild summer conditions , you should also employ either a double-wide sleeping pad or a pad coupling system to cut down on drafts from below . You should also use pad attachment straps to hold the quilt snugly in place throughout the night .
Some family read this quilt work a moment cold , hence look at ordering a fond version than you wait to require .

I think Nunatak is a real good competitor when matched up with Enlightened Equipment . Both are extremely customizable to the user ’ sec preferences , but I think that Nunatak remove it up a notch . Thanks for all the well study and attempt mass like you contribute to the community .
