Ideal times to plan a trip to Las Vegas

While sunny, clear skies are typical in Sin City throughout the year, certain months offer more favorable conditions for a trip. Desert regions are known for extreme heat, but temperatures drop significantly in the winter.

Exploring the top attractions in Las Vegas involves plenty of walking, so it’s best to plan your visit when the conditions are ideal.

During spring and fall in Vegas, daytime temperatures typically range from the high 60s to the 70s, occasionally reaching the 80s. This pleasant weather is ideal for strolling along the Strip, enjoying time by the pool, or venturing out to nearby parks and attractions for a day trip.

March to May, along with September and October, offer pleasant weather and fewer crowds, provided you steer clear of significant holidays and events such as March Madness.Daytime brings pleasant weather, while nighttime remains comfortably cool without dipping below freezing.

In the winter months, beach clubs may not be open for relaxation, but you can take advantage of smaller crowds and festive holiday lighting.

Navigating Las Vegas

Many of the top activities in Las Vegas are conveniently located near each other, but traveling between specific spots can be unexpectedly time-consuming and famously costly. The entire length of the Vegas Strip spans approximately 4.5 miles, and that’s only the central stretch.

The distance from the Strip to Fremont Street in the historic downtown district, home to the original casinos (more details on those later!), spans a full 6 miles. Though exploring on foot is enjoyable, you’ll want to arrange other transportation options to fully enjoy everything Vegas has in store.

Below, we’ve outlined the top choices for navigating the city.

Complimentary transit

WalkingMany of the best activities in Las Vegas are located along the main strip, making walking an easy way to explore the area. However, if you travel to Las Vegas in the summer, the extreme heat can make walking unbearable, so it’s better to choose alternative transportation to avoid the scorching desert sun.

TramsThree distinct tram services run along the Strip, allowing you to board and disembark at any of the hotels as you wish.

Many hotels in Vegas are operated by the same corporation, which is why these trams connect their sister properties. While they don’t stop at popular tourist spots, a brief ride can bring you within easy walking distance of where you want to go.

  • Mandalay Bay connects to Luxor, which then links to Excalibur. This path links Mandalay Bay with the Excalibur Hotel along the Strip’s western edge, including a stop at Luxor along the way.
  • Park MGM leads to Aria, which connects to Bellagio. The path begins at Park MGM (close to the Aria entrance), passes by the Crystals Shopping Mall adjacent to the Cosmopolitan, and concludes at the Bellagio’s South Tower (near the spa area).
  • Mirage Transformed into Treasure IslandThis tram travels directly between the two hotels without any intermediate stops, allowing you to move from one casino floor to the other in under five minutes.

ShuttleThe complimentary shuttle offers a convenient way to discover downtown, with stops at the Arts District, Mob Museum, and Fremont Street. These locations are highly pedestrian-friendly and simple to navigate, though it’s advisable to stay vigilant with personal items due to frequent pickpocketing, particularly around Fremont Street.

The monorail system glides smoothly along its elevated track, offering a futuristic and efficient mode of urban transportation. Its single rail design minimizes ground space usage while providing a quiet and reliable travel experience. The monorail seamlessly integrates into cityscapes, connecting key destinations with speed and precision.

The monorail offers a convenient way to travel along the downtown strip, connecting the SAHARA Station in the north with the MGM Station in the south. With stops at five hotels on the Strip, it significantly shortens the distance you need to walk.

The monorail arrives at each of its seven stops every 4 to 8 minutes, with fares changing based on seasons and holiday weekends. A one-way trip costs approximately $5, while a full-day pass is priced at $13. Alternatively, discounted options are available for 3, 4, 5, and 7-day passes. (Online purchases may offer additional savings).

The Deuce

The Deuce is a 24-hour double-decker bus service that operates between the South Strip Transfer Bus Terminal and the Fremont Street Experience in downtown Las Vegas. It’s an ideal choice for those exploring downtown, as the bus makes stops at major tourist spots and all the hotels located on the Las Vegas Strip.

Riding the Deuce is the most affordable public transportation option in Vegas. With just $6, you can enjoy two hours of travel, or pay $8 for unlimited rides throughout the day.

We recommend spending the additional $2 for unlimited rides to avoid stressing about the two-hour limit. And if you’re in Las Vegas for the weekend, the three-day pass at $20 is an incredible deal!

You can buy a deuce pass through several methods, and the easiest option is using the rideRTC app.

Taxis/rideshares

Taxis and ridesharing apps are a common transportation option in Las Vegas, much like in other large cities. Based on our observations, we recommend steering clear of taxis because they often attempt to charge excessive fares.

During our trip to Las Vegas, we inquired with a cab driver about the cost of a trip from the Strip to downtown and were told it would be $25-30, while a rideshare app showed the same ride for $8-12. Unsurprisingly, we went with the cheaper option! Still, checking different prices is essential to ensure you’re getting the best deal.

When using Uber and Lyft, it’s wise to check the fares on both apps as pricing varies frequently based on demand and the number of drivers nearby. Though this is one of the simplest and most hassle-free ways to travel, costs can add up quickly, particularly if you rely on it as your primary means of getting around.

Hiring a vehicle for temporary use

While renting a car might seem appealing to minimize walking, it’s generally unnecessary unless you plan to take day trips or hike outside the city. Numerous free and public transportation choices are available, providing easy access to major hotels and attractions within and near the urban area.

Additionally, hotel parking often comes with high costs, and navigating the Las Vegas Strip by car is generally discouraged. For a clearer overview of available transportation choices, we’ve detailed each option below.

Got your own car or a rental? Don’t miss these exciting day trips from Las Vegas! Each destination is just under two hours away from the city.

Psst! If you own a car or have a rental, don’t miss these exciting day trips from Las Vegas! Each destination is just a two-hour drive from the city.

The best way to travel from Las Vegas Airport to the Strip

Traveling from Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) to the Strip covers just 3 miles, with numerous shuttle services available for your convenience.

Getting a taxi or ride share from the airport to the Strip is straightforward. Just follow the airport signage to locate the taxi queue, or use your ride share app’s instructions for pickup. Taxis typically charge a flat rate of approximately $25 for the trip.

Before booking a taxi or an Uber/Lyft, verify whether your hotel provides a complimentary shuttle service, as this is a common offering. If your accommodation doesn’t include this option, numerous affordable shuttle services operate between the airport and various locations.

An alternative way to reach the Strip is by using Super Shuttle. Their affordable round-trip transportation services can be reserved through their website.

Another option is the Deuce (previously noted), which also services the airport. If you’ve purchased a pass, your ticket (in effect) covers the airport transfer as well.

The Hoover Dam stands on the Colorado River, marking the boundary between Nevada and Arizona. Visiting this landmark is a remarkable experience for those in Las Vegas who appreciate history, given its significant impact on the city’s growth.

Directions to reach the destination:Even though it’s slightly off the beaten path, visiting doesn’t require a rental car. The service can pick you up from several prominent hotels on the Strip. It functions more like an excursion than a simple shuttle, with the ticket covering round-trip transportation to the dam as well as the admission cost.

Cost: A trip to see the dam costs at least $40—$15 per vehicle (if you drive yourself), $10 for the Visitor Center, and $15 per person for a tour—and even more if you opt for a guided experience. However, there’s a far more affordable way to see the dam…

Money-saving advice: While visiting the Visitor Center and joining a tour is worthwhile, those only interested in seeing the dam can skip the extras. Park on the Arizona side (after crossing the dam) for a free view of the structure.
